Los Angeles Clippers head coach Ty Lue exudes confidence about the upcoming NBA season, particularly regarding the readiness of star forward Kawhi Leonard. As the team gears up for training camp, Lue assured fans and the media that Leonard, who has been plagued by knee issues, will be ready when the Clippers convene in Honolulu, Hawaii, on October 1.
"I speak to him all the time. He'll be ready for [Clippers] training camp. He's feeling good and I know he'll be ready for training camp," Lue expressed. This readiness is crucial for a team that will have to navigate the season without the significant presence of Paul George, who departed for the Philadelphia 76ers in free agency.
Leonard's Knee Troubles
Leonard's knee problems were a major storyline last season, culminating in his absence during the final eight regular-season games due to inflammation. The issue also reared its head during the playoffs, keeping him out of critical matchups against the Dallas Mavericks—a series that exposed the Clippers' need for their star forward.
Despite these challenges, Leonard showcased his determination by participating in a mini-camp with Team USA in Las Vegas ahead of the Tokyo Olympics. However, his Olympic aspirations were cut short when he was replaced by Boston Celtics guard Derrick White. The Clippers' president, Lawrence Frank, didn't mask his disappointment about Team USA's decision.
"It was USAB's call, and I was, quite frankly, very disappointed with the decision. Kawhi wanted to play. We wanted him to play. I was there the first two practices. He looked very good. Participated, was a full participant in everything that they did," remarked Frank.
Frank went on to elaborate, "I expressed to them, I really wish that they would have given Kawhi more time. We have the benefit of having been around Kawhi for five years to see his body and see where he's at. So, he looked good to me."
Moving On Without Paul George
The Clippers face a significant challenge this season as they adjust to life without Paul George. His departure to the 76ers has undoubtedly changed the dynamics of the team. However, Lue embraces this challenge with a renewed sense of motivation.
"When you lose a guy of Paul George's stature, instantly people [think] oh, they can't win or they're not going to be competitive. But that just challenges me even more. OK, people are counting us out or people don't think we're going to be good. That right there just gives me an extra dose of [motivation]," Lue explained.
Looking Ahead
The Clippers are also on the brink of a new chapter with the inauguration of their new arena on October 23 against the Phoenix Suns. This new home represents a fresh start for a team determined to make waves despite the offseason turbulence.
As training camp approaches, all eyes will be on Leonard's condition and how the team gel without George. The Clippers' ability to adapt and thrive under these new conditions will be a focal point as they aim to prove their doubters wrong and make a deep run in the upcoming season.
In the meantime, fans can be reassured by Lue’s optimism and the encouraging signs from Leonard’s recent participation in mini-camps. With a blend of seasoned leadership and fresh challenges, the Clippers' journey through this NBA season promises to be one filled with anticipation and grit.
