Milwaukee Bucks forward Khris Middleton has had an eventful offseason, marked by a series of arthroscopic surgeries on both ankles. These procedures were deemed necessary to address lingering injuries that significantly impacted his performance during the past season.
Offseason Surgeries and Recovery
Middleton’s left ankle injury dates back to a game on February 6, when he landed awkwardly on Kevin Durant's foot after attempting a jumper. This incident not only caused a sprain but also nagged him throughout the rest of the season. Durant was later called for a flagrant foul for occupying Middleton’s landing space.
The first of Middleton’s arthroscopic procedures focused on this left ankle, aiming to clean up any lingering issues. Additionally, a minor surgery took place in mid-June to address the problems stemming from another sprain sustained during Game 2 of Milwaukee’s first-round series against the Indiana Pacers. Despite these setbacks, reports indicate that Middleton is on track to be ready for the season’s opening night. He has already commenced light court work to ensure he is fully prepared.
Impact on Bucks' Performance
Middleton's health has been crucial for the Bucks, as his absence was notably felt last season. Limited to just 33 games due to knee issues, his injuries have undeniably influenced Milwaukee’s performance. He also suffered an MCL sprain in the first round against the Chicago Bulls during the 2022 playoffs, with the Bucks subsequently being eliminated by the Boston Celtics in a tightly contested seven-game series.
Changes in Team Roster
The Bucks have been active this offseason, making several roster changes. They signed Gary Trent Jr., Taurean Prince, and Delon Wright to minimum-salary deals, while the major move involved trading Jrue Holiday in exchange for Damian Lillard. However, integrating Lillard into the lineup alongside Giannis Antetokounmpo has proven to be more challenging than originally anticipated. The much-anticipated pick-and-roll synergy between Lillard and Antetokounmpo did not materialize as expected last season.
Concerns regarding age and durability also loom large for the Bucks. With Brook Lopez now 36 years old and Lillard recently turning 34, maintaining consistent performance and managing injuries could be significant hurdles. As The Athletic's Shams Charania aptly noted, “Given the perimeter defense the Bucks lost by sending out Jrue Holiday in the Lillard trade, they are going to have to win with an elite offense moving forward.”
The Road Ahead
As the Bucks gear up for the upcoming season, much of their success will hinge on the health and performance of key players like Khris Middleton and the successful integration of Damian Lillard into the team’s dynamic. While Middleton’s offseason surgeries were crucial for his return to form, the team’s ability to gel and overcome the age-related concerns remains to be seen. With a revamped roster and high-stakes expectations, the Bucks are poised for a season where every player’s contribution will be pivotal.
