City Council Approves $800 Million Renovation Plan
In a decisive move on Monday night, the Charlotte City Council voted to approve an $800 million renovation plan for Bank of America Stadium, home of the Carolina Panthers. The council’s commitment includes a substantial investment of $650 million, with team owner David Tepper covering the remaining $150 million upfront. Tepper, who has already invested over $117 million in previous stadium upgrades, has also agreed to potentially cover an estimated $421 million in overages for future capital improvements.
The city's portion of the investment will be financed through existing hospitality and tourism tax resources, ensuring that the funding does not directly impact the city's taxpayers. The measure passed by a 7-3 margin, highlighting a mix of support and reservations among council members.
Ensuring the Panthers’ Future in Charlotte
Despite the Panthers' recent struggles on the field, including a 31-68 record and six head coaches since Tepper took ownership in 2018, the council was determined to prevent the team from leaving Charlotte.
