The Philadelphia Eagles' recent acquisition, Mekhi Becton, is quickly becoming an integral part of the team's offensive line dynamics. Signed in May, Becton was anticipated to be a backup for established tackles Jordan Mailata and Lane Johnson. However, the Eagles had broader plans for Becton, envisioning his role at the guard position.
Despite his initial role as a backup, Becton has already demonstrated his versatility by filling the left guard gap during the Eagles' mandatory minicamp. This opportunity arose in part due to the absence of Landon Dickerson, who was first away for personal reasons and later sidelined by a lacerated toe. Becton’s swift adaptation to the interior line position showcases his potential to be a critical asset for the Eagles.
Becton's tenure with the New York Jets was marred by issues including injuries and inconsistent play. Nevertheless, he appears determined to turn over a new leaf with Philadelphia. "I know I'm not, like that wasn't the thing when they signed me here. I don't have to get ready. I just know when my number is called I'm always gonna be ready," Becton remarked, highlighting his readiness to seize any opportunity.
Adapting to the Guard Position
The transition from tackle to guard demands not only physical quickness but also mental agility. Becton candidly discussed these challenges, noting, "Guard, it happens way faster. You don't have time to say, you just gotta settle with what you gotta settle with. Your feet don't have time to set up what you gotta set up. It's real faster. It's right away. Your hands gotta be ready to fire right away." This insight reflects his understanding of the immediacy required at the guard position, as opposed to the slightly more forgiving pace at tackle where, "You have time to figure out if you're in the right spot or not."
Despite the learning curve, Becton remains optimistic about the switch. "It's an adjustment, but it's not a hard adjustment. I can do it," he confidently stated. His ability to pick up pointers from his teammates is also a cornerstone of his learning process. "I just learn from everybody all day every day. It's a fun thing to do," he added.
Competing for the Starting Role
Training camp has further cemented Becton's commitment and adaptability. He is currently vying to challenge Tyler Steen for the starting right guard spot. Interestingly, Becton has not yet played at this position, making his potential ascent to starter status even more impressive. "If I can start, I'll start. If I don't, I'll be ready," he asserted, a testament to his team-first mentality and professional attitude.
Becton's physical attributes also bring unique advantages to the guard position. His impressive arm length stands out compared to typical defensive tackles, a feature he acknowledges could play to his benefit. "I feel like I don't really know the disadvantages yet, but the advantages would be my arm length compared to defensive tackles and stuff like that," he explained.
Crucial Weeks Ahead
As preseason games approach, the pressure will be on Becton to showcase his ability to adjust and perform under real-game conditions. His focus remains on being prepared for whatever role the team requires. "I don't know what I'm gonna be when I come in here. Once I step on the field, I know I gotta be ready for whatever," Becton emphasized.
The coming weeks will indeed be pivotal in determining Becton’s role within the Eagles. For now, his adaptability, combined with his physical prowess and positive attitude, positions him as a crucial element in the team’s offensive line strategy.
