Historic Appointment: Jessica Campbell Joins Seattle Kraken Coaching Staff
In a groundbreaking move for the National Hockey League (NHL), Jessica Campbell has joined the Seattle Kraken's coaching staff, making her the first woman to serve as a full-time coach in the league’s history. This significant appointment further bolsters Campbell’s already impressive coaching résumé.
Campbell's journey to the NHL has been marked by a series of pioneering milestones. In 2022, she became the first woman to coach in the American Hockey League (AHL) when she took on an assistant coaching role with the Coachella Valley Firebirds. Her contributions there were instrumental in developing key players and managing the Firebirds' power play, earning her accolades and respect throughout the league.
Kraken coach Dan Bylsma, who witnessed Campbell's impact firsthand during their time together in Coachella Valley, was full of praise for her capabilities and dedication. “During our tenure in Coachella Valley, I saw firsthand Jessica's commitment to player development. Her ability to establish relationships with her players, specifically Tye Kartye, Shane Wright, and Ryker Evans, was an important factor in this hire. I'm looking forward to continuing to work with her at the NHL level,” Bylsma stated.
Campbell’s coaching prowess is evident in the achievements of her players. Tye Kartye, a standout under her guidance, won the 2023 AHL Dudley "Red" Garrett Award for the league's most outstanding rookie. With her expertise, Kartye tallied 20 points (11 goals, nine assists) over 77 games for the Kraken, showcasing the depth of his development.
Despite her historic achievements, Campbell remains focused and humble about her journey. “I just focused on the task at hand in coaching, but absolutely, it's obviously a tremendous opportunity and I'm honored to be where I am and to be -- it's a humbling feeling to be a part of the Kraken organization,” she said. Her words reflect a commitment to staying grounded and continuously improving her craft. “For me, that's what it's about. Just putting my head down and doing the work. You know, where it takes me it takes me, but I’m obviously honored to be on this path and continue to just do the good work that it takes to hopefully reach that goal.”
Campbell’s coaching career has been diverse and multifaceted. She served as team captain in the first-ever CWHL All-Star Game during the 2014-15 season and has worked as a power-skating coach for elite athletes, including Natalie Spooner and Joel Edmundson. In 2021, she took on coaching roles with the Nurnberg Ice Tigers, enhancing her experience and ability to adapt to various team dynamics and cultures.
Her acumen has also been recognized on the international stage. Campbell made history by becoming the first woman to coach a men’s national team during the 2022 IIHF Men’s World Championship with Team Germany. During this championship, she had the opportunity to work with Philipp Grubauer, now the Kraken’s goaltender, further solidifying her coaching credentials at the highest levels of the sport.
With her appointment to the Kraken, Campbell is likely to play a crucial role in improving the team’s power play, an area where she has previously demonstrated significant expertise. As Seattle looks to their future with optimism, they can count on Campbell to bring fresh perspectives and proven strategies to the coaching staff.
Jessica Campbell’s historic hiring not only signifies a landmark moment for the NHL but also highlights the gradual breaking down of barriers within professional sports. Her journey underscores the importance of dedication, talent, and relentless pursuit of excellence—a true testament to her character and coaching philosophy.
“I'm a big believer in just keeping a growth mindset every day. Obviously, my goal is to continue to coach at the highest level, but timelines aren't necessary for me and definitely not where my focus is,” Campbell remarked, illustrating her philosophy of continued growth and resilience.
As the Kraken prepare for the upcoming season, the addition of Jessica Campbell to their coaching team marks a significant step forward, not just for the franchise but for the league as a whole. Her presence is certain to inspire both players and aspiring coaches alike, leaving an indelible mark on the sport.
