Spain Defeats Georgia 4-1 in Euro 2024 Quarterfinals

In a thrilling quarterfinal match of the Euro 2024 held in Stuttgart, Spain triumphantly defeated Georgia 4-1. The Spanish squad, under the strategic guidance of coach Luis de la Fuente, displayed a dominant performance, overcoming an early setback to secure their place in the semifinals where they will face the formidable German team, the tournament hosts, on Friday.

Georgia's Early Advantage

The match began with an unexpected twist as Georgia took an early lead, courtesy of an own goal by Spain's Robin Le Normand. This momentarily silenced the Spanish supporters and provided Georgia with a brief glimmer of hope. Despite this initial setback, the Spanish team remained composed, an attribute clearly emphasized by their coach.

"We were calm at half-time, there was no anxiety and the players knew what was needed," remarked Luis de la Fuente. The calm and focused mindset paid off as Rodri, the player who has been described by his coach as "a computer who makes everyone else play," scored the equalizer, leveling the score and reigniting Spain's momentum.

Spain's Flourishing Attack

Spain's offensive prowess was on full display throughout the match, recording an impressive 35 shots on goal. The relentless attacks ultimately bore fruit with additional goals from Fabián Ruiz, Nico Williams, and Dani Olmo. Each goal underlined the depth and versatility of Spain’s talent pool.

In particular, the young talent, Nico Williams, and the prodigious Lamine Yamal were standout performers. At just 16 years and 353 days old, Yamal became the youngest player to feature in the knockout rounds of a major tournament. Not only did he make history with his appearance, but he also contributed significantly to Spain’s attacking force, becoming the first European teenager to assist in two or more goals at a major tournament since Cristiano Ronaldo at Euro 2004.

De la Fuente praised Yamal's performance, acknowledging both his potential and the learning curve ahead. "He played really well, but I think he can do much better. He likes to take risks, but maybe there are moments when a bit more calm is needed. But he is 16 and he is still learning. Today is great for that and for what is to come in the immediate future," he noted.

Georgia's Historic Run

Despite the defeat, Georgia made history in this tournament by not only making their first appearance in a major tournament but also reaching the knockout stages. Coached by Willy Sagnol, the lowest-ranked team in the competition performed admirably, reflecting Sagnol's leadership and the team's tenacity.

"We are not disappointed but feel sad because we lost. I am sure in some days we will realize what we have done and happiness will come back quickly," Sagnol reflected post-match. He also voiced concerns about the application of VAR during the match. "It was clearly offside. If [Netherlands defender] Denzel Dumfries is offside [against France] then that was 10 times more offside today," he said. "Players and staff don't understand anymore. VAR is a great thing, but maybe [we should] wait until we know how to use it properly."

Looking Ahead to the Semifinals

As Spain prepares to face Germany in the semifinals, de la Fuente remains optimistic yet cautious about the upcoming challenge. "With all respect to all the other national teams, we have the best team and the best players. Does that mean we're going to win it? No, but we will fight for it. We are up against a very powerful team in Germany," he conceded.

Rodri, who played an instrumental role in Spain's quarterfinal victory, echoed his coach's determination. "Germany will be strong at home, but we aren't afraid. We must produce a good performance, but we are not here to play well or leave a good image, we are here to win with everything we have -- that is the mentality of this team." His words encapsulate the resolve and ambition driving the Spanish squad as they set their sights on the next challenge.

Spain’s blend of seasoned campaigners and youthful exuberance positions them as a formidable contender for the Euro 2024 title. With their eyes fixed firmly on the prize, Spain’s journey towards potential glory continues, fueled by a harmonious blend of experience, talent, and an unyielding competitive spirit.
